GARAGE DOOR V4 — PRACTICAL STRIP FASTENING REVIEW

All drawing dimensions in cm. Read with the canonical CAD parameters and the existing assembly manual.

RECOMMENDATION
Give Rafael an actual example for the decorative trim instead of another blank 'selected schedule' instruction. Keep the structural panel/frame/hinge connections separate because those connections carry the door and resist sagging; a trim fastener layout does not establish their capacity.

1. DO NOT CALL ALL THE NARROW PIECES 'STRIPS'
P2 exterior plywood infill: two pieces, each 213.865 x 5.325 x 1.190625.
P4 inside plywood infill: two pieces, each 213.865 x 5.325 x 0.508.
T1 decorative vertical trim: four pieces, each 213.865 x 7.5 x 0.6.
T2 decorative horizontal trim: six pieces, each 112.565 x 7.5 x 0.6.
C2 center spacer: one piece, 213.865 x 3 x 0.3 nominal; actual gasket compression governs thickness.
C1 center overlap cover: one piece, 213.865 x 6 x 0.6; RIGHT leaf only.

P2/P4 fill the missing plywood width and are part of their respective skins. They are NOT the decorative frame. T1/T2 sit on top of the outside plywood and make the two rectangular fields. C1/C2 make the center seal joint.

2. P2 — HOW IT FITS AND HOW TO FIX IT
Use the narrow strip at the MEETING edge of each leaf; mirror the layouts.
Measure the actual usable main-sheet width and finished leaf width first.
Infill width = leaf width - main sheet width - seam gap.
Current model: 127.565 - 121.92 - 0.32 = 5.325.
Cutting example: mark the required finished strip on the good side; place the saw kerf on the waste side. Clamp and fully support the sheet and use a straight guide. Do not hold a 5.325 cm strip by hand beside a saw blade. For a table saw use the machine's narrow-rip method/guards/push devices. Cut ends square after ripping and trial fit before final trimming.
Lay the frame flat. Put removable 0.32 cm spacers between the strip and the main sheet.
Both seam edges must bear on the full-height 8.89 cm meeting stile. Across that stile: 3.245 main-panel bearing + 0.32 gap + 5.325 strip.
Fasten the infill independently into the stile, before T1 covers it. Use an exterior wood screw with a broader flat/countersunk head rather than relying on the small decorative trim head. Stop the head flush so the applied trim can sit flat.
A nominal 3.175 cm screw through 1.190625 cm plywood reaches 1.984375 cm into timber; this is a reach example, not an approved skin/racking schedule. Measured screw length must be used.
Drill/drive only where the entire screw path is over sound timber. The support zone geometry is known; the actual panel-to-frame count/spacing and adhesive detail remain to be chosen for the finished door and actual plywood/frame.
Keep the 0.32 cm joint open. Do not glue across the panel-to-panel gap or fill it with rigid filler. Remove temporary spacers after the strip is held.
For P4, repeat the supported seam on the inside. A low-profile pan/washer head can avoid crushing the 0.508 cm liner; where a flush head is needed, seat it very shallowly without cutting through the veneer. A nominal 2.54 cm screw gives 2.032 cm geometric penetration into the timber after passing through the 0.508 cm liner. This still does not select a structural skin schedule.

3. T1/T2 — CONCRETE DECORATIVE-TRIM EXAMPLE
Assumption: flat, sound, exterior-rated plywood trim 0.6 cm thick, as currently modeled. MDF, interior-only plywood, badly split strips, or different thicknesses are not equivalent.
A practical fastener family is GRK FIN/Trim #8 with the exterior-compatible finish for the actual wood/environment; its manufacturer lists fine carpentry and exterior trim. The US handy pack lists #8 x 1-1/2 in, part 119724, 100 count, T10 drive. For naturally acidic species/where required by the environment, use the appropriate stainless variant.
IMPORTANT LENGTH DETAIL: the CURRENT GRK product-page-linked technical drawing dated 11/01/2023 gives the nominal '1-1/2' product length L of 1.55 in = 3.937 cm. An older 2015 searchable drawing gives 1.575 in; use the current linked drawing and measure the purchased screw. Do not call the product exactly 3.81 cm or hardwire 4.0005 cm. A measured approximately 4.0 cm screw through 0.6 trim + 1.190625 exterior plywood gives approximately 2.21 cm geometric penetration; the current drawing's 3.937 cm nominal length gives 2.146375 cm.
The CURRENT #8 drawing gives: head diameter 0.50038 cm, head height 0.19558 cm, smooth shank diameter 0.28956 cm, thread root 0.254 cm, major thread diameter 0.38862 cm. These are published nominal dimensions without tolerances, so measure the purchased screw. User-facing labels can say approximately 4 cm for this trim product and approximately 5.1 cm for its nominal 2-inch version.

Suggested decorative retention layout, designed here as an assembly proposal:
- One row along each strip's width centerline, 3.75 cm from its long edge.
- First and last fixings about 5 cm from the strip ends.
- Distribute intermediate fixings at no more than approximately 25 cm.
- T1: 10 fixings each, with exact equal example spacing 22.6516667 cm between the 5 cm and 208.865 cm marks.
- T2: 6 fixings each, with exact equal example spacing 20.513 cm between the 5 cm and 107.565 cm marks.
- For both doors: 4 x 10 + 6 x 6 = 76 decorative-trim screws. A 100-pack gives installation spare capacity.
These counts are for holding the lightweight decorative strips flat. They are NOT a manufacturer door schedule or a count for frame joints, skins, hinges, latch, cover, or jamb anchors. Material condition, actual fit, local wood splitting or bowing may require adjustment.

Practical drilling/driving sequence:
a. Mark actual hidden frame locations on the plywood; check the marked fixing row lies over the stile/rail.
b. Dry fit and clamp the strip flat. The T2 horizontals fit BETWEEN the T1 verticals with square butt ends, not a stacked overlap and not a half-lap.
c. Make a sample with offcuts of the same 0.6 cm strip, outer skin, and frame. Drive the chosen screw and inspect both sides.
d. GRK's general product page says its tip removes the usual need to predrill; in this thin trim, an offcut trial and predilling near ends are prudent. Simpson separately recommends predrilling trim screws near ends/butt joints to prevent splitting. Do not present a generic pilot chart as a mandatory GRK requirement.
e. Distinguish holes: a clearance hole is in the trim, letting the screw pass without jacking the strip away; the smaller pilot is in the timber, leaving material for the threads to grip.
f. Do not hardwire a clearance/pilot diameter in the issued manual for this untested 0.6 cm stock. Select the smallest clearance that passes the actual screw through the strip; keep the head well supported. Choose a timber pilot for the actual screw and wood and verify on an offcut. The manufacturer's small head only measures about 0.50 cm, so a large generic clearance/countersink can leave little bearing. Do not transfer generic traditional-wood-screw pilot charts to this modern trim screw or to structural screws.
g. With a trim head only about 0.50 cm across, do not enlarge the seat until the head can pass through the 0.6 cm strip. A generic large #8 flat-head countersink is not automatically appropriate. Seat the chosen small head just flush. Use a low drill clutch and finish gently; do not use impact force to bury it deeply.
h. Fill only the individual cosmetic head recesses with a suitable exterior filler; sand and finish. Keep the moving plywood seam separate.
No full-width glue bed is required for this screw-fastened trim proposal. If a compatible adhesive is added for a rattle-free fit, its glue zone must not bridge the two plywood faces at the covered seam.

4. MEETING T1 — THE EASY DETAIL TO GET WRONG
At each meeting edge, the 7.5 cm trim covers:
5.325 cm infill + 0.32 cm panel seam + 1.855 cm of main sheet.
The trim centerline is 3.75 cm from the leaf meeting edge, so it lies entirely over P2 (which extends from 0 to 5.325 cm from that edge).
Place its screws along that line into the stile. Do not add a second line through the narrow 1.855 cm overlap on the main-sheet side. Do not bond the back of the trim rigidly to both sheets.
This leaves the visible face neat while the covered plywood joint remains a movement joint.
Stagger the trim holes vertically relative to pre-existing P2/skin fasteners; do not drive into another screw or split an old hole.
Transfer the middle horizontal trim datum across the CLOSED PAIR. Equal distances measured independently from two uneven door bottoms can give misaligned visible rails.

5. C1/C2 — FIX ONLY TO THE RIGHT DOOR
Close and secure LEFT, then bring RIGHT closed. Fit the actual gasket before final spacer/end cuts.
In the current geometry, C1 supports 3 cm on RIGHT, spans the 0.6 cm center gap, and overlaps LEFT by 2.4 cm.
A proposed screw axis 1.5 cm from the RIGHT leaf's meeting edge is centered in the 3 cm spacer/support zone. It is also laterally clear of the T1 centerline at 3.75 cm.
Path: C1 cover 0.6 + actual spacer (0.3 example) + T1 trim 0.6 + P2 exterior plywood 1.190625 + timber.
Total before timber = 2.690625 cm in the example.
A nominal/measured 5.08 cm exterior screw reaches 2.389375 cm geometrically into timber. A 5.0 cm actual screw would reach 2.309375 cm. A 3.81 cm screw would reach only 1.119375 cm.
The current linked GRK drawing lists its nominal 2-inch FIN/Trim at L=2.00 inches, or 5.08 cm; it does not list 5.2 cm. A practical example is ten fixings along the center cover, about 5 cm in from each end and about 22.65 cm apart along the proposed right-side row. This is weather-cover retention only: no handle, latch or security hardware should rely on this thin cover. Count it separately from the 76 T1/T2 trim screws, and offset the vertical positions where necessary to miss other fasteners. Final top/bottom cover end cuts remain site-fitted.
Use a head that retains the thin cover without pulling through; the cover should remain removable to service the gasket. Do not conceal the whole cover under permanent glue. Pilot and countersink cautiously on an offcut as above.
No screw goes into the center air gap or crosses into LEFT. Check the free overlap by opening RIGHT first. Cover ends and gasket transitions are field fitted.
This is useful fixing geometry, not a lock/security/wind-rated assembly specification.

6. REACH IS NOT LOAD CAPACITY
All penetration numbers include the tapered tip in their simple geometric subtraction. Effective thread engagement, wood species, head pull-through, edge distances and hidden joint/fastener collisions still govern real fastener behavior.
Frame half-laps, outer structural skins and hinges must not inherit the decorative trim's #8 screw size or 76-piece count.
For comparison, a bare 3.81 cm thick half-lap consists of two 1.905 cm halves. A 3.175 cm screw from one bare face reaches 1.270 cm beyond the lap plane; a 3.81 cm screw reaches the opposite bare face. Neither arithmetic result approves a load-bearing joint or specifies screw number. Never turn this into 'two screws per corner' without designing/confirming the actual connection.
